Chief Executive Officer
Robin is tasked with scaling the WaterSmart business and leads the team to improve water-use and operational efficiency for municipal and investor-owned water utilities globally. He has over twenty years of experience in leveraging technology to solve global problems.
Prior to WaterSmart, Robin was CEO of Terracotta Inc., a big data software provider. He joined Terracotta from TIBCO Software Inc., a leader in analytics and infrastructure software, during which time he established and grew businesses in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. He also served on the boards of Software AG and DataSynapse Inc. Earlier in his career, he was an analyst, consultant and salesperson in capital markets technology.
Robin graduated with honors in Economics & Italian Studies from Lancaster University in the UK.
Founder & Chief Policy Officer
Peter leads WaterSmart’s governmental and regulatory affairs activities in addition to new market development. He has decades of experience in water conservation and efficiency, water rights and transfers, environmental regulation, finance, economics and policy.
Prior to WaterSmart, Peter was Director of Water Resource Protection for The Nature Conservancy, where he led river restoration efforts throughout California. As Vice President at Western Water Company, he completed water transfer agreements with California agricultural water districts to conserve and lease water to municipal water districts. Early in his career, Peter also worked at GE Capital Solutions, Environmental Defense Fund, and the Pacific Institute.
Peter earned his MBA in Finance from the Yale School of Management and an MES in Water Science, Management and Policy from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Chief Operating Officer
Dominique runs operations for the company and advocates for WaterSmart's customer engagement platform as a tool to address water scarcity, water affordability concerns, and changing customer expectations.
Prior to WaterSmart Dominique focused on climate and environmental policy first as a Governor's Fellow for Governor Bill Richardson at the New Mexico Environment Department, then later as a consultant at Cascadia Consulting Group in Seattle. She has also spent time working on natural gas policy at the White House Council on Environmental Quality and on corporate sustainability at Hilton Worldwide.
Dominique graduated with a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and has a BA from Yale University. She is originally from Colorado and likes hiking 14ers and eating sandwiches.
Director of Customer Success
Ora oversees the successful implementation and continuous operation of WaterSmart's utility partnerships. As the primary point of contact for utility clients, Ora ensures smooth day-to-day operations as well keeping an eye on overall program results for individual clients and across WaterSmart’s customer base.
Prior to joining WaterSmart in 2011, Ora worked at Stagecast Software, managing the educational software company’s corporate website and working with potential customers. Ora earlier served as director of Client Relations at Softbank Expos (Ziff-Davis), specifying and delivering online presences for technology event producers. She held a similar position at Internet Media Services and started her career at Data General, providing sales support and analysis for the computer manufacturer.
Ora holds a B.A. and M.B.A. from Cornell University and also studied at the London School of Economics. Having dipped her toes into the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans, she hopes to experience the Southern and Indian Oceans soon.
Chief Technology Officer
Douglas Flanzer is responsible for the technical design, strategy, and success of WaterSmart’s software-as-a-service platform.
Prior to WaterSmart, Doug was the Global Head of Persistent Analytics at Thomson Reuters where he led an engineering team charged with the calculation and distribution of complex financial analytics. Doug arrived at Thomson Reuters via the acquisition of StarMine, where as the Director of Engineering, he was responsible for successful delivery of their SaaS investment management platform, financial models, and analytics.
Doug graduated from Stanford University with a BS and MS in Civil Engineering with a focus on environmental fluid mechanics and hydrology.
Director of Product Management
Emily works with WaterSmart’s customers, and our marketing, sales, client services and engineering teams to design products that make life easier for our utility customers and their customers.
Prior to joining WaterSmart, Emily designed products for the financial services industry at StarMine (acquired by Thomson Reuters). Before becoming a product manager, Emily worked as a consultant building financial models used in high-stakes and high-risk decision-making.
Emily holds a BA in Mathematics from Middlebury College (cum laude) and an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University.
Head of Sales
Erik joined WaterSmart after five years of leading global sales at Remedy Interactive. With his team, Erik grew the company significantly, culminating in the sale of the company to Battery Ventures. Prior to Remedy Interactive, Erik had the opportunity to collaborate with many diverse and innovative companies around the world during 13 years of sales, strategy, supply chain, and alliances work at PeopleSoft, HP, and FedEx. Erik earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis and his MBA from Vanderbilt University. He loves to run and to check things off his Bucket List.
Director of Marketing
Jeff manages WaterSmart Software’s go-to-market strategy development and marketing campaign activities, along with sales operations support.
Prior to WaterSmart, Jeff managed channel development and regional field marketing for EnerNOC, an international leader in energy intelligence software and demand response solutions. He joined EnerNOC from Coyle Industries, where he pioneered the development of renewable distributed generation solar power systems for military, developing world, and other off-grid electrical applications. Jeff previously spent a decade in the digital media industry where he held various product management, marketing, and executive sales positions. Jeff began his career as a commercial audio recording engineer and producer.
Jeff earned a Master of Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at the University of California. He also received a BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Christina S. Wong
Christina S. Wong
Christina manages WaterSmart Software’s go-to-market strategy development and product marketing activities, along with executing marketing campaigns.
Prior to WaterSmart, Christina worked in brand management at Del Monte Foods and in product marketing at Johnson & Johnson. At Del Monte she managed the promotions, budget, business analysis, and new product line extensions for their 2nd largest brand. In addition, Christina was a public relations consultant to startups and small businesses. Previously, Christina spent 8+ years working at the intersection of the private and public sector focused on environmental sustainability. She worked for several elected officials where she passed legislation. Her work with nonprofits focused on building strategic partnerships. Christina won a national environmental award (The Brower Awards) and has two publications focused on California term limits and on local government statues.
Christina earned a Master of Business Administration from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. She also received a BA in Conservation and Resource Studies from the University of California, Berkeley where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Product Marketing Manager
Seth is responsible for product marketing strategy and activities at WaterSmart. Prior to WaterSmart, Seth managed product marketing and go-to-market for home energy storage products at Enphase Energy. A semi-reformed political junkie, Seth began his career in Washington, DC, where he spent six years working on energy and environmental issues for Senator Bernie Sanders, and on nuclear cleanup issues as a congressional liaison at the Department of Energy. When he's not thinking about innovative ways to bring new tools and products to market, Seth likes to spend time with his six-year-old stepson, teaching him how to ride a bike and ski. He also enjoys cooking and is an accomplished bread baker and pizzaiolo. Seth earned his MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and his BA in political science with a focus on environmental studies from Washington University in Saint Louis.
Marketing Operations Manager
Page oversees the marketing technology solutions utilized by WaterSmart’s sales and marketing teams. He is responsible for marketing automation, CRM, marketing processes, and sales operations support. Prior to WaterSmart, Page spent seven years in online media and advertising operations at CBS Interactive managing a team of online marketers, supporting engineering in software development projects, and ensuring smooth daily operations for several global web properties. Page began his career in client services for research consultancy, Strategic Programs, in Denver, CO. He holds a BS in Management and Operations and a BA in Spanish from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Business Development Manager
John Sala leads national business development at WaterSmart. He brings to the role over 25 years of technical, business development, and product marketing domain expertise acquired from working in the North American utility industry. Prior to joining WaterSmart, John held senior product marketing positions with Neptune Technology Group, a leading supplier of hardware and software solutions for the water industry. He was responsible for product marketing strategy and activities supporting Neptune’s utility software solutions and metering data collection hardware. Prior to that, John provided technical leadership and consulting services for Allegheny Energy (now First Energy), a Fortune 500 investor owned electric and gas utility in the Northeast. There he was responsible for enterprise level projects implementing call center automation, field meter reading systems, field service systems, and automated metering. John graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Industrial Management and Computer Science. In his free time, John enjoys outdoor activities with his three kids on their farm in western Pennsylvania.
Subodh Nayar leads market development in the mid-Atlantic region. He brings to the role almost twenty years of broad electric and water utility domain expertise acquired from working for utility vendors and consulting to utilities in both North America and internationally. He specializes in helping reduce non revenue water and implementing best practices for the use of data to engage customers in more efficient use of water and energy and to increase system reliability.
Subodh has been widely published in both the utility industry and technology business press on topics such as the business case for intelligent smart grid deployment, the role of TOU pricing in peak load shaving and successful utility use of communication technologies in smart metering and distribution grid operation. Prior to roles at Aclara and the Current Communications, Subodh founded PLT, a systems integrator that specialized in rural capacity development. In that role he developed a unique approach to transform rural electric system into smart energy management and Broadband networks. He also led the creation of a technology evaluation tool set, widely used by the electric coop community to integrate computing capabilities across their organizations and into the field.
Subodh was educated in the UK in Portsmouth, where he graduated with an honors degree in Business Studies.
Regional Sales Manager
Tom leads WaterSmart's business development efforts across the Southeast and Midwest. He brings over 20 years of marketing and sales leadership experience in the technology sector, including 12 years at health and safety software leader PureSafety, along with stints at other innovative companies in wireless telecommunications, e-commerce, and healthcare. Tom earned his BBA in Marketing and Management from the University of North Dakota, and also studied international business and intercultural communications at the American College of Norway. Tom lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife and two daughters, and enjoys traveling and spending time on the city’s lakes.
Regional Sales Manager
Brett is responsible for working with individual utility partners to ensure that the implementation process and ongoing program are seamless and successful.
Prior to joining WaterSmart, Brett spent the majority of his career at Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the finance and hydropower departments. In his most recent position, he supervised an engineering team standing up a new asset management program across PG&E’s large portfolio of hydropower plants, reservoirs, and water conveyance facilities. Brett also worked for Opower evaluating market opportunities for the company’s smart thermostat product.
Brett holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Middlebury College and an MBA from UC Berkeley. In his free time, you can find him surfing, mountain biking, or skiing. His long term goal is to do all of these activities in the same day.
Regional Sales Manager
Michelle Camp works to build partnerships between WaterSmart and Texas water utilities. As a native Texan, Michelle understands the difficult challenges facing Texas including increased water scarcity. Prior to joining WaterSmart, Michelle gained relevant experience in municipal and state water management at the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club, the Lower Colorado River Authority, and the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department.
Michelle graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Environmental Science. She also holds a Masters in Environmental Management from Yale University with a specialization in water resource science and management. During her graduate studies at Yale, Michelle gained experience in sustainable water management in the Western US and abroad, which included spending time in Australia at the Murray–Darling Basin Authority. Michelle enjoys swimming in Barton Springs Pool, playing tennis, and eating Torchy’s Tacos.
Regional Sales Manager
Robert Edson is the Regional Sales Manager for WaterSmart in the Rocky Mountain and Upper Midwest regions. Robert has a unique background in municipal software; he was instrumental in designing and deploying the country's first statewide Next-gen VOIP 911 platform with a statewide integrated emergency notification system. Prior to WaterSmart, Robert held executive management positions as head of North American sales & marketing for Australian emergency response and global assistance firm, Dynamiq, and as head of global sales & marketing for MissionMode, a SaaS incident management and notification company, where he built and led a global inside, direct, and channel sales force. By client request, Robert personally managed relationships with firms such as Caterpillar, Fed Ex, Intel, the GAP and dozens of other organizations to manage critical incidents ranging from operational issues through major crises with MissionMode. Robert holds a BA from Colorado State University specializing in Crisis Communications/Public relations and political science. He resides in Parker, Colorado with his wife and two children where he enjoys spending as much time in Colorado’s rugged, beautiful backcountry as possible.
Sales Development Manager
Bill is responsible for initial sales contact with prospects to qualify them for further engagement with outside reps, as well as helping to build general market awareness of WaterSmart, expanding and maintaining our SFDC database, and passing on market intelligence to Sales and Marketing.
Bill has had extensive experience in a similar capacity at other water-focused technology companies, beginning with WaterTrax, then Aquatic Informatics, and most recently AquaCoustic Remote Technologies. Bill earned both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Business Administration (Marketing) at Simon Fraser University, near Vancouver BC.
In his spare time Bill engages his vegan foodie persona in checking out new restaurants, as well as taking in numerous music and film festivals. At home, he pursues an audio hobby with passion.
Sales Development Manager
Lori is responsible for initial outreach to prospective water utility customers to help evaluate potential solution needs and establish prospective customer engagements for WaterSmart in the eastern region. She helps build general market awareness and passes on market intelligence to Sales and Marketing. Her background includes over 15 years of sales and customer relations experience in a wide array of industries including software, higher education, and a stint in the toy industry. Lori studied international business and art at Middle Tennessee State University earning a BA in Art History. In her spare time, Lori enjoys kayaking, checking out new restaurants, and attending music and art festivals.
Sales Development Manager
Dale Paez is one of WaterSmart's newest sales team members. He comes to the team with 15 years of sales and customer relations experience across retail, phone, and technology sales. His most recent position was nine years with Dell, Inc., where he provided total solutions for hospitals, school systems, and various large corporations and entities. Dale was born and raised in Lubbock, TX, and studied at South Plains College. He currently lives in Nashville, TN with his wife, two children, and his Yorkshire Terrier. Dale considers himself a bit of a movie geek, whose hobbies and passions span pop culture and movies of all genres.
Senior Customer Success Manager
Carolyn is responsible for working with individual utility partners to ensure that the implementation process and ongoing program are seamless and successful. Before joining WaterSmart, Carolyn worked on conservation and sustainability programs at the United States Department of Agriculture. She also worked on similar programs for the Adirondack Park Agency, Tompkins County Government, and Clinton County Department of Emergency Services in New York. Carolyn studied environmental science and business at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, where she led a team of students to institutionalize a program that converted waste vegetable oil from dining halls into biodiesel for use in campus vehicles. She later received her MPA from Cornell University, with a focus on environmental policy. She spends most of her free time taking French classes, leading a Girl Scout troop, hiking, and learning to sail her Spencer 1330 sailboat, on which she currently lives.
Senior Customer Success Manager
Dana is responsible for working with individual utility partners to ensure that the implementation process and the ongoing program are seamless and successful. Dana has almost 20 years experience in water conservation, utility program implementation, water resources and integrated planning, demand modeling, compliance assessment and policy. Prior to joining WaterSmart, Dana was the Water Use Efficiency Manager at Kennedy/Jenks consultants where she developed conservation plans and led other planning efforts for utility customers. As the Water Conservation Program Manager at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, she led the planning, development and implementation of all demand-related activities at the utility. Dana started her water career at the Pacific Institute and has represented environmental groups, utilities and the private sector on the Board of the California Urban Water Conservation Council. Dana holds a M.Sc. from New Mexico State and a B.Sc. from McGill University.
Senior Customer Success Manager
Ellisa is responsible for managing the implementation process and ongoing program for utilities and municipalities across the U.S. She has extensive experience working with clients, having worked with dozens of companies and organizations as a PR and sustainability professional.
Prior to WaterSmart, Ellisa worked as a consultant with education nonprofit NewSchools Venture Fund, and cleantech advisory firm Kachan & Co., where she authored the report, “Cleantech Opportunities in Japan”, on behalf of JETRO. Over the years, she has launched and managed a number of PR initiatives for such firms as Oracle, First Carbon Solutions, ClimateCHECK, Care2.com and The Artemis Project.
Ellisa is currently an advisor for NewSchools Seed Fund. She has served on the boards of Net Impact-San Francisco, World Wildlife Fund- YLD and Women in Consulting-San Francisco, which she also co-founded. She received an MBA in sustainable management from Presidio Graduate School and a BA in international relations from Syracuse University, where she also studied at its London program.
Customer Success Manager
Lindsey is responsible for working with individual utility partners to ensure that the implementation process and ongoing program are seamless and successful. Lindsey's experience in the water sector began in graduate school, where she studied international water policy and interned with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). She spent several years working on water conservation with the CPUC before moving on to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission to work on local adaptation to climate change. Lindsey joins WaterSmart after a sabbatical of sorts, during which she rode her bicycle across Asia and studied the impacts of climate change on water resources in the communities she biked through. Lindsey holds a BA in Earth & Environmental Sciences from Wesleyan University and an MS from the Energy & Resources Group at UC Berkeley. When not thinking about how to solve water resource problems, Lindsey can be found on her bike, in the mountains, or on the soccer field.
Customer Success Manager
Jim Turner has nearly two decades of experience working in both the public and private sector tackling important issues in environment, climate change, emergency management, information technology, and corporate social responsibility. As Customer Success Manager with WaterSmart, Jim assists utility partners in implementing and realizing value from the WaterSmart platform. Prior to WaterSmart, Jim was the Executive Director of the California Resiliency Alliance; a statewide non-profit organization focused on connecting government emergency management teams with private sector stakeholders to increase overall community disaster resilience and recovery capacity. Jim also served two years as Private Sector Liaison for the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management.
Prior to his tenure in emergency management, he worked on developing software architecture training conferences and educational events for the financial investment industry. He is a recognized presenter, mediator, and facilitator, and has led cross-sector work groups to benefit Bay Area resilience and disadvantaged communities. Jim earned his MBA in Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco’s Graduate School of Business, where he also worked as an Adjunct Professor teaching Business Communications. Jim is a native of New Orleans who has called San Francisco home for the past decade.
Deborah is responsible for creative development across WaterSmart’s engagement platform, including interface and print design. She plays a key role within the Product team in strategic product development, content creation, and adherence to best practices in user experience design and behavioral science. She also leads cross-departmental collaboration to cultivate WaterSmart’s brand across touchpoints for both utility customers and end-consumers.
Deborah established her career with Kym Abrams Design, where she developed design concepts and strategic messaging for clients in education, healthcare, the arts, social justice, and the environment. She contributed to a wide variety projects ranging from publications and identity development to websites and social media strategy. Clients included Heartland Alliance, University of Chicago Harris School, MacArthur Foundation, Zoobooks, Loyola University Medical Center, and Harris Theater. Her work for the Joyce Foundation was recognized by multiple Graphis awards.
Deborah holds a BFA in Graphic Design and Art History from Washington University in St. Louis. In her free time, you can often find her climbing on rocks and at meet-ups focused on civic hacking.
Charlie is responsible for providing a great user experience across WaterSmart's engagement platform by creating clean, simple designs and vibrant illustrations. Prior to joining WaterSmart, Charlie designed at Stanford University curating campaigns that helped advance educational programs. Her collaboration with outreach organizations like the Culinary Institute of America, Google and the University of California, Riverside also allowed her to promote and advocate culinary development and healthy nutrition. When not glued to her computer, Charlie is a fitness enthusiast who's interests range from CrossFit to rock climbing.
Will works directly with the data from all clients, providing updates on the effectiveness of each program on a variety of metrics including water savings and customer satisfaction. He also designs and implements experiments to evaluate improvements to the product. WaterSmart works directly with academics at leading research institutions, and Will manages those relationships to facilitate breakthroughs in how we understand the ways people/companies use water, and what levers are most effective in encouraging water conservation.
Will is an econometrician at heart. He spent 4 years as an energy consultant, evaluating all types of energy efficiency programs. He specialized in behavioral modification, demand response and home energy audit program evaluations. He applies the skills learned from those evaluations to provide insight on how WaterSmart can improve the program and how best to design the internal M&V procedures.
Will earned a B.S. in Economics and Math from Bucknell University and a MS in Applied Econometrics from UC Santa Cruz. Will enjoys running, climbing, backpacking, skiing, or most anything that gets him outdoors.
Chad Haynes is WaterSmart’s Software Architect. He is responsible for WaterSmart’s server architecture and web applications.
He holds a BS from the University of North Carolina. When not attached to a computer, Chad can be found sailing the bay or playing the banjo.
Senior Software Engineer
Drew works on all aspects of WaterSmart’s software stack, from customer onboarding to feature development to operational support.
Prior to WaterSmart, Drew worked on large-scale real-time software platforms at Epic Systems, Thomson Reuters and Rdio. Drew was responsible for server architecture, scaling and performance of Rdio’s on-demand music service.
Drew holds a BA in Computer Science from Knox College. In his spare time, he enjoys thinking of projects to work on.
Jolene works across WaterSmart’s software stack, working on new features, onboarding new customers, and working on operations support. Prior to WaterSmart, she developed several applications used in volunteer deployments including 4Bells and the inception of Shotgun.io. Her application, in use by several area non-profits, has been called “One of the 8 Apps that may actually change San Francisco” by TechSoup. In 2015, she completed the Hackbright Academy Computer Science Fellowship, one of the most competitive and difficult software fellowships in the U.S. She also holds a BS in Finance and MBA from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Aaron works on WaterSmart's engineering team building out product features, integrating new utility partners, and supporting daily operations. He hails from the port city of Stockton, California where he grew up with his three brothers and a cat, Starscream. He is passionate about music, food, art, and technology, so it's no surprise he made San Francisco home. Having discovered music long before programming, he considers himself a classically trained pianist who also writes code.
Senior Product Manager
Dr. Farshad Samimi is a Senior Product Manager at WaterSmart Software. He has extensive product, technology, and strategy experiences, having served as a product lead for various companies in the cleantech industries. Farshad specializes in creating best-of-breed products which combine software, hardware, networking, and partnerships into disruptive solutions that improve our lives. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Michigan State University, where he conducted pioneering work on cloud and mobile computing technologies. Farshad lives the San Francisco with his wife and two lovely daughters, and enjoys hiking, yoga, and Latin and Lindy Hop dancing in his free time.
Kelly works in partnership with WaterSmart’s various departments to design and deliver products that change the way the world uses water. Prior to joining WaterSmart Kelly completed a Masters in Environmental Management at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, where her coursework focused on water resource management and product strategy. Earlier in her career Kelly worked at the Natural Resources Defense Council, where she spearheaded water communication initiatives and supported campaigns and litigation to protect threatened aquatic ecosystems. When she’s not responding to Facebook posts about California almonds, Kelly can be found racing the sun on her mountain bike. Kelly received her B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University.
Emmanuel is responsible for WaterSmart’s accounting operations and has nearly 3 decades of experience including SOX compliance and financial reporting. Prior to WaterSmart, Emmanuel did consulting work with Cloudera Software where he managed the company’s investment portfolio and all cash related activities. Before Cloudera, he worked for Guidewire Software, a provider of software to the insurance industry, where he built the accounting department from ground up and helped lead the company from startup stage to a successful IPO. Emmanuel previously spent time as assistant controller with VA Software and, Postini an internet security software firm that was acquired by Google. Emmanuel early spent time with Hitachi Data System and LGI – Premium Fit. Emmanuel earned management accounting degrees from Dillard University and Loyola University. Emmanuel enjoys all types of sporting events, including, Soccer, Football, Basketball and Baseball.
Operations and Policy Manager
Ali is responsible for assisting WaterSmart’s Policy department in researching and formulating strategies around current water policies.
Prior to joining the WaterSmart team, Ali worked with the Town of Danville, California’s city planning department and assisted with land use research for a local non-profit, the Greenbelt Alliance. Ali received a B.S. in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning with a focus on Advanced Policy Analysis from the University of California, Davis. While at U.C. Davis, she was an active member of the Environmental Club.
Down the road, Ali plans to pursue further environmentally focused education. In her free time, Ali enjoys traveling, swimming, and rooting for her favorite team, the Golden State Warriors.
Sales & Proposal Writer
Shana Sharp is responsible for assisting WaterSmart's Sales and Operations Teams in writing proposals for services to potential utility clients. Shana started her career as a proposal writer over a decade ago, and has worked in education at all levels, and city government. Shana graduated with a MA in Communications from Webster University, and a BS in Communications from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Originally from St. Louis, MO, Shana enjoys her free time reading, watching good movies, and spending time with family and friends.
