Behavioral water efficiency pioneer helps regional suppliers with education and compliance

San Francisco — WaterSmart Software, the pioneering leader in behavioral water-use efficiency technology, today announced support for legislation passed on May 31, 2018 that makes water conservation a way of life on a permanent basis in California. Assembly Bill 1668 and its companion, Senate Bill 606, combine to detail requirements for California water suppliers to develop and enforce water consumption targets or face fines of up to $10,000 per day beginning in 2027.

Water-use efficiency standards will be determined at the local level and will include indoor targets, outdoor irrigation targets, and water loss goals. This approach, which requires approval by the State Water Resources Control Board, allows for regional flexibility based on parcel size and urban density, while driving the entire state to higher efficiency standards regardless of drought conditions.
