WaterSmart Awards Pilot Programs to Winners of National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation

Winners include Dallas, Corpus Christi, Huntington Beach, Bremerton, Crete, and Cathedral City

San Francisco, CA — WaterSmart® Software, the leading behavioral water efficiency company that helps water utilities better communicate with their customers to save water and money, today announced it has awarded programs to the winners of the Wyland Foundation’s National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. The winning cities for each population category include Dallas, TX; Corpus Christi, TX; Huntington Beach, CA; Bremerton, WA; Crete, NE; and Cathedral City, CA. The National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is an annual event in which cities compete to see whose residents pledge to save the most water.

“WaterSmart was delighted to sponsor the National Mayor’s Challenge this year as a way of raising awareness of the importance of water-use efficiency,” said Peter Yolles, Founder and CEO of WaterSmart in a recent press conference with Mike Rawlings, Mayor of Dallas. “As we’ve seen working with municipalities throughout the west in recent years, small changes in behavior at home can lead to vast water savings for the entire community. We look forward to partnering with this years’ winners to help their residents save even more water, and to measuring the impacts of those savings activities.”

As a reward for garnering the most water conservation pledges in their population bracket, each winning city will receive a WaterSmart Software Behavioral Water Efficiency program. This means a number of residents in each city will receive WaterSmart’s Home Water Report, a bi-monthly communication that compares residents’ water use with homes of similar size, and also includes targeted recommendations for reducing their water use. Independent studies have found that homes receiving Home Water Reports use, on average, 5 percent less water than homes that don’t receive the reports.

In addition to receiving Home Water Reports, residents are also able to log on to WaterSmart’s Customer Portal through any web browser or mobile device. There, they can view more detailed water use history and learn about relevant water efficiency tips. Utility staff in each city will also be able to access customer data, track water savings citywide, and run performance reports in WaterSmart’s Water Analytics Dashboard.

In a recent independent study by the California Water Foundation, WaterSmart’s technology has been proven to triple customer engagement while reducing residential water demand by as much as 5 percent per year. The company works with over 20 municipalities and utilities across the western United States including: the City of Sacramento; Palo Alto, CA; Mountain View, CA; East Bay Municipal Utility District; the City of Davis, CA; Roseville, CA; Newport Beach, CA; Greeley, CO; and Cedar Park, TX.

The Wyland Foundation’s National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is an annual event to drive increased awareness of water use. This year, residents pledged to save over 1.4 billion gallons of water. Residents who pledged were entered into a drawing to win other prizes. These included a Toyota Prius Plug-in, a $1,000 Home Depot shopping spree, and 50 smart irrigation controllers from The Toro Company.
